Smooth mountains

I’ve heard it said before: ‘child, if the mountain was smooth, you couldn’t climb it’.There might be a reason for the mountain, and a purpose for its roughness. Wait patiently on the Lord to see you to the top!

Just A Thought

In His Time

“Years passed, and the king of Egypt died. But the Israelites continued to groan under their burden of slavery. They cried out for help, and their cry rose up to God. God heard their groaning, and he remembered his covenant promise to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He looked down on the people of Israel and knew it was time to act.” (Exodus 2:23-25 NLT)
Sounds clichéd, but yet holds eternal truth- God never forgets His promise to his children and our prayers never go unheard. Days, even years,  may pass, but when the time is apt, He will act strongly on your behalf. Until that time, He surely supplies the needed grace to hold on.
So, hold on. Keep faith.

Scriptures for The Tough Times

QUESTION:

What verses/chapters of the Bible do you turn to when faced with difficult times?

Please share your verse in comments to encourage and bless other readers here.

We win! Yes, we do!

A young Christian became discouraged as he read about the entrance of sin into the world and the seeming victory of evil over man in Genesis (the first book of the Bible). He quickly turned to the Revelation (the last book of the Bible) to see how the whole story ends.

Oh how wonderful it is to sigh relief with him and exclaim, “Thank God we win!” Yes we do, because we are on the Lord’s side (Selwyn Hughes).

Keep faith, keep hope, keep trusting the Lord, even if it seems like the battle is being lost. We win!

Refiner’s Fire

He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver. Malachi 3:3

The story is told of a woman who read this verse and didn’t understand it. She wondered what it meant, so went to observe a silversmith at work. She noticed the silversmith held a piece of silver over the fire where the flames were hottest.

She asked if it was true that silversmith had to sit there in front of the fire the whole time the silver was being refined. The man answered yes, and added that he also has to keep his eyes on the silver the entire time it was in the fire because if the silver was left a moment too long, it would be destroyed.

The woman asked further asked – “How do you know when the silver is fully refined?”  “Oh, that’s easy – when I see my image in it.” he replied.

We too, like silver, are refined in the heats of life. Notice, His eyes watch closely over us, and like the silversmith, He holds us and He will not leave us in the fire any longer than needed.

Prayer for Oklahoma

I woke up to the news of the sheer devastation caused by the tornado in Oklahoma last night- heartbreaking to see images of the destruction caused by this unstoppable force of nature. Shall we join together in praying for the many people who have lost their homes and livelihoods, as well as the hearts that are grieving the loss of friends and family just now. May they know something of the Lord’s presence, peace and provision at such a difficult time.

Let’s pray also for the rescue teams, medical staff and organisations working in the most difficult conditions in an attempt to save lives, provide food, water, shelter and clean up the chaos.  May they know the strength and enabling of the Lord as they give themselves in helping to save and restore.

Keep Believing

Lazarus, a ‘beloved’ friend of Jesus, was on his dying bed. Mary & Martha, Lazarus’ sisters, sent word to Jesus to come heal him. But by the time Jesus finally arrived, Lazarus was already dead and buried for ‘four days’ (John 11). Seemingly, God, was four days late! Mary rebuked Jesus on his arrival – ‘If you had been here, my brother will still be alive…’- her legitimate expression of disappointment.

However, here’s the amazing part- Jesus responds “Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?” He then goes to Lazarus’ tomb and calls the dead man back to life. Hallelujah!

Here’s the moral: nothing is ever too difficult for the Lord. He might be four days late, but He will surely be on time- God’s time. Sounds trite, but will forever hold true – You only need to hold on, and keep believing…

“Your Promise Revives Me…”

For whatever was written …was written to teach us, so that by our steadfast and patient endurance and the encouragement drawn from the Scriptures, we might hold fast to and cherish hope. Romans 5:4.

It is good to have family and friends that can comfort us in hard times, but there can be no better place to find comfort and encouragement than in the Word of God. Can I encourage you to make a habit of regularly reading the Bible yourself?  It is full of assuring words of God’s comfort and reminder that He never leaves, nor forsakes.

Not sure where to start? Try Psalm 34

“Your promise revives me; it comforts me in all my troubles.” Psalm 119:50

God of All Comfort

“All praise to the God… Father of all mercy! God of all healing counsel! He comes alongside us when we go through hard times, and before you know it, he brings us alongside someone else who is going through hard times so that we can be there for that person just as God was there for us. We have plenty of hard times… but no more so than the good times of his healing comfort—we get a full measure of that, too.” 2 Corinthians 1:3-5 (The Message)

For anyone that might be hurting just now- may you know the full measure of God’s comfort.

‘Life is not fair!’

“Life is not fair! If there is a loving and all-powerful God, why should He allow people to suffer!?”

Very legitimate question and concerns raised by a lot of people, even the most devout Christians. Nicky Gumbel (Author: Searching Issues) details a conversation between Gavin, a Pastor & a boy who had fallen down the stairs at a very young age, consequently had been in and out of hospital.

Gavin: ‘How old are you?’
Boy: 17
G: ‘How many years have you spent in hospital?’
B: 13
G: ‘do you think that is fair?’
B: ‘God’s got all eternity to make it up to me.’

Wow! What depth of insight! The young man got this – “Yet what we suffer now is nothing compared to the glory he will reveal to us later.” Rom 8:18 (cf 2 Corinthians 4:17)

May you know God’s comfort in your present sufferings.

The Right Focus

“…keeping our eyes on Jesus, the Champion who initiates and perfects our faith.” Hebrews 12:2 NLT

Isn’t it easy to focus so much on our own inadequacies, past failures and limitations in life? Saved by grace, we are being transformed gradually into the perfect image of Christ. We are works-in-progress, meaning it is possible to get things wrong sometimes. In such times, may you remember to lift your eyes to Jesus in faith believing that He who started the good work of salvation in you, will bring it also to a perfect finish.

Prayer: Spirit of God, help me keep my focus on Jesus at all times so that my failures and weaknesses wouldn’t stunt my growth in you.

You Will Never Leave Me

“His love in time past forbids me think He’ll leave me at last in trouble to sink” John Newton, Hymn ‘Begone Unbelief, my Saviour is near’

The hymn writer obviously discovered one of the secrets of victory in life- that God never forsakes his children. What a blessed assurance! The Bible is filled with many exhortations to “remember what the Lord has done in the past“. This allows us to use the past as a great tool to cope with the present, as well as carve the future.

Lord, Your love in the past, especially what You achieved through the cross, forbids me to think You’ll ever leave me now. Help me remember this all the time.

Be blessed,

Grace & Perspective

“Give me the cross of Jesus Christ and the grace of God, and I will come forth victorious no matter what this world throws at me.” Dominic Doe.

Surely, the right perspective and the Lord’s abundant grace does give us all we will need to stand strong even in the most difficult circumstances. May the Holy Spirit etch this simple, yet profound truth upon your heart.

Every blessing,
